By James Shepherd on Jul 21, 09 09:38 AM in News

This is the horrific aftermath of a motorway pile-up involving 259 vehicles that left 10 people fighting for their lives.

At least 66 others were injured in the carnage, said to be caused by a dangerous combination of torrential rain, low sun, and speeding drivers.

A collision sparked a series of crashes over a two-hour period leaving a 25-mile backlog in its wake. More than 300 ambulances, fire engines and police cars attended the scene on the A2 near Braunschweig in northern Germany.

Helicopters were also scrambled to take victims to hospital.

Police said it was the worst pile up in the road's history.

One shaken driver told how he was hit from behind and his car pushed into a ditch. Luckily, he and his family managed to crawl out unharmed.

The motorist added: "My only thought was to check on our little son."

Firefighter Klaus Wulfes said: "I have not seen anything like this before.

"I have seen many accidents but never a pile-up this big."
