And Finally... Space station clean-up begins after toilet breaks

By James Shepherd on Jul 20, 09 10:25 AM in News

One of the two toilets on the International Space Station flooded yesterday.

The "pump separator" broke in the middle of complicated robotic arm work being carried out by the crews of the ISS and docked Space Shuttle Endeavour.

When the astronauts informed Houston, Mission Control advised them to hang an "out of service" sign on the toilet door until it was fixed.

They then hurriedly tried to work out how best to mend the multi-million dollar Russian-built toilet which was flown up on a Shuttle last November.

In the end, Belgian Frank De Winne, put on goggles, gloves and a mask to clean the mess up.

Flight director Brian Smith said there is no urgency yet - there is a toilet on the Shuttle but it can't eject waste while docked.
