And Finally... Volunteers wanted to be eaten by maggots

By James Shepherd on Jul 10, 09 09:16 AM in News

Two hundred patients are wanted for a medical trial - to be eaten by maggots.

University researchers want to study how fly larvae help wounds heal by eating away at dead flesh. And they believe they could save the NHS a fortune by cleaning wounds better than drugs.

Cardiff University scientists need volunteers for a trial at hospitals across Britain.

Prof Keith Harding, head of the university's department of wound healing, said: "Anecdotal evidence suggests maggots are very successful in speedy cleaning of wounds."
