And Finally... Antiques Roadshow hopeful told £1k vase was just from Tesco

A man who turned up at the Antiques Roadshow had his dreams of riches shattered - when he was told his expensive bottle was a cheap supermarket container.

Presenter Fiona Bruce revealed how a collector arrived for the new series with glassware he had spent more than £1,000 on.

But a glass expert told the smartly dressed and wellspoken man: "It's an empty olive oil bottle, Tesco, circa 2008 - it's worth nothing."

BBC star Fiona, 45, said the footage will not be shown in September's new series, to save the collector's blushes.

She said: "It would have made great television but it was just too cruel. The guy was devastated. Poor chap.

"The thing about the show is not to humiliate people."

The Antiques Roadshow is one of the BBC's most successful shows. Last year it regularly attracted nine million viewers.

I once did see an old lady on the Antiques Roadshow, she had brought in a tiny hollow glass chicken, with a plastic bottom. She was told very kindly that it was of no financial value, but maybe had "a lot of sentimental value". I felt really sorry for her!
