More than 16million Brits are so superstitious that they regularly carry out routines they believe will bring them good luck - or ward off bad.
More than half still dodge ladders , a study has found.
A third salute magpies, four out of 10 touch wood and cross fingers, while half of us always make a wish blowing when out birthday candles.
A spokesman for the National Lottery, which polled 3,000 people , said yesterday: "Don't dismiss superstitions.
"A third of Lottery millionaires admitted receiving a sign of their impending win."
TOP 10 SUPERSTITIONS: 1 Don't walk under a ladder; 2 Make a wish when blowing out birthday candles; 3 Touch wood for good luck; 4 Cross fingers; 5 Don't put up an umbrella up in the house; 6 Throw spilt salt over left shoulder for luck; 7 Don't put shoes on the table; 8 Put money in a purse or wallet as gift; 9 Salute a lone magpie; 10 Don't cross on stairs.
