Girls may complain it looks unkempt or feels rough to the touch, but the unshaven look on a guy is attractive to four females in 10.

Nerdiness came second, proving many of them like a man who knows about techie stuff.

The poll of 2,500 women also revealed 91% would prefer a partner who had a few flaws to a 'perfect' one.

And more than half would be happier with a man who was soft and cuddly instead of toned and muscular.

Researchers called these secret preferences because almost one in five women would never admit what they really find attractive.

A spokesman for www.onepoll.com, which carried out the research, said: "Publicly, girls will claim they want a muscly guy, who is hair-free and manly enough not to show his emotional side.

"But these results prove that they secretly want something different.

"It seems they like a guy who is able to show a softer side, or who is carrying a little bit of extra weight.

"I'm sure it's a relief to men to find out the girls aren't looking for that perfect guy."

Other secret turn-ons to feature in the top 10 include grey hair, wearing glasses and being a passionate supporter of a sports team.

And two-thirds of women prefer a man who does not fuss about his appearance.
