Coverage of the London 2012 Olympics could be wiped out by a solar storm.

Scientists say the Sun is "waking up" after 97 years of low activity and its flares could knock out TV satellites and power lines.

The experts do not know exactly when solar storms may strike, but studies suggest a peak in 2012.

"We don't know if it will shoot up, but the recipe is right," said Professor Richard Harrison of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford.
