And Finally... Size of Easter eggs shrinking (apparently)

By James Shepherd on Mar 30, 10 11:29 AM in News

Easter is the time for giving chocolate eggs, but it seems the treats are getting smaller as their prices keep rising. A study has found that some have shrunk in size by as much as 38% from last year - yet customers are having to fork out more.

Guylian has reduced the content of its eggs from 285g to 245g but raised the cost by £1 to £6, according to mysupermarket.co.uk.

Nestle and Cadbury have also shrunk theirs while keeping prices the same or putting them up. Mysupermarket's Jonny Steel said: "Manufacturers sometimes downsize products, such as Easter eggs, to help keep costs low.

"This leaves shoppers paying the same as before, while getting less in return. From a healthy eating perspective this may not be bad, but consumers should still be aware."

Nestle admitted its Smarties Easter Egg was smaller. But a spokeswoman said: "Prices are set by the retailers. Many eggs are sold on promotion and there are lots of good deals at the moment."

While Guylian said that rising cocoa prices and a weak pound had led to the price rise.
