And Finally... Cambridge punts sunk in turf war

By James Shepherd on Aug 11, 10 09:21 AM in News

Saboteurs have used concrete to sink two punts worth £5,000 each raising fears of an escalating turf war between rival firms.

Yobs cut through chains securing the two tourist boats before filling them with concrete and gravel.

They were found trashed in Cambridge's picturesque Mill Pond.

Owner Nick Maseychick said: "It was a proper job. I don't think it was done by your ordinary vandal.

"The worry is that this foolish act could lead to other people doing equally stupid things and it could end up becoming a tit-fortat escalation." Last year punts belonging to another operator were sawn in half. Hiring out the flat-bottomed boats on the busy river Cam is a trade worth £6million a year.
