And Finally... Woman 'comes back to life' inside coffin

By Tony White on Dec 28, 10 10:08 AM in News

A Brazilian woman escaped being buried alive by just a few hours when an undertaker noticed she was still breathing.

Maria das Dores, 88, was then rushed back to the hospital that had previously declared her dead.

Brazilian officials have since launched an investigation to establish how the hospital in the town of Ipatinga, about 340 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, had failed to realise that the woman was still alive.

Maria had originally been admitted to the hospital suffering from blocked arteries. She also has Alzheimer's disease and was bedridden. Doctors declared her dead on December 22 because she exhibited no vital signs.

Her 'body' was transferred to a local undertakers, where an official looking into the coffin noticed that she was still breathing and that she had moved.

Custodia Amancio, Maria's daughter, said: "We are happy to know my mother is alive and unhappy with the lack of respect due her. We are still not sure if we will sue the municipality and hospital.

"She continues in the intensive ward treatment ward and we are praying that she will improve quickly."
