"BETTER safe than sorry" is the message from North Wales Police after "dynamite" found at a Nercwys recycling centre turned out to be a bar of soap.

An Army bomb disposal unit was called to the Nercwys Road site at 10.57am on Christmas Eve by worried staff who believed the substance, brought in by an elderly woman, to be dynamite.

A 200 metre area around the site was cordoned off and the centre was closed.

Inspector Alun Oldfield said: "The bomb disposal team arrived within the hour and took the suspected dynamite away to be tested.

"It turned out to be some sort of cleaning solution, but as the woman's relative had previously worked in a quarry, it was thought to be better safe than sorry.

"If it had have been dynamite and it had exploded it would have been bedlam. The manager of the site did the right thing to call the police."

The site, run by AD Waste, was reopened to the public on Boxing Day.
