TRADITIONALLY, our twin towns have an outstanding record in maintaining a flourishing panoply of amateur football - be it soccer, rugby league or rugby union.
And today, the number of under- nines and teenage teams participating in all three sports provides sufficient evidence that continuity looks guaranteed for many years to come.
It is more than 50 years since I first began reporting on amateur soccer before graduating to coverage of Runcorn Football Club and the concluding years of the great Jack Search era.
A GROUP of Runcorn writers this week launched a new book all about the town's recent social history.
Brindley-based Scribes and Scribblers produced Personal Memories of Lost Landmarks and Past Times in Runcorn, which is available now at the Curiosity Book Shop.
A WARTIME Chronicle mystery has been solved Cluedo-style.
It was Mrs Alexander with a lead pipe in the school room.
HISTORICALLY important and of real significance, two documents detailing the holdings of the Leigh Estates in Widnes can now be seen at the Catalyst Museum in West Bank.
Such a finding will obviously be of considerable interest to many of the townspeople in and around the borough.
Museum curator Paul Meara and his staff are understandably delighted the documents have landed on their doorstep, more or less out of the blue as it were.
They were sent by Jean Finlan, of The Haystacks, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, who describes herself as "An old Widnesian in every sense of the word!"
In a letter to the museum, Jean explained that the documents had been in her possession for many years but without her looking at them.
THIS week's Pioneer Nostalgia pictures span the fifties, sixties and seventies, with some memorable images of canteen staff in the town, a jive club, a youth club and coronation street party.
Residents of 'little' Bailey Avenue at a street party for the Queen's coronation in 1953.
A READER has shed more light on a picture published last week of Alvanley Primary School in the 1950s.
Hilary Smith, née Shore, of Frodsham spotted herself on the photograph (back row, fifth from right) brought in by Grenville Britland and set about naming as many of her classmates as she could.
Mrs Smith, who returned to live in Alvanley six years ago and also owns the picture, recognised a host of characters from her past as well as headteacher Beatrice Hatton.
IMAGES of Lache in the 1940s will be shown alongside contemporary photos to portray daily local life linked across half a century.
The Lache Photographic Project, Life in Lache in 2009, funded by Lache Neighbourhood Management and the former Chester City Council, was started by celebrated photographer David Heke and took place earlier this year in February.
