When the Auction House was Church School in Nantwich
A PIECE of Nantwich's history is featured in this class photo of the Church School in Market Street, dating back to the 1920's.
Provided by John Shackleton, of Manor Avenue in Crewe, his father-in-law Ernie Crawford is the young lad on the front row, fourth from right. The school building is now the Peter Wilson Auction House.
John says: "My father-in-law later had a grocers and sweet shop at 68a Beam Street where the library now is, then moved across the road to 57 Beam Street where the Co-operative pharmacist now stands.
"Crawford families were originally Crowsfoots, and Crowsfoot Lane ran behind the Market Street School, hence the name of the recently demolished Crowsfoot Centre.
"There were five families of Crowsfoots in Beam St according to the 1792 survey, all living near to each other around the area of the present library."
Do you have any memories of the school or the area around the library from that time. Do you recognise anyone in the photo? Phone the Chronicle on 01270 502433 or e-mail crewe. news@cheshirenews. co.uk.
