Historic moment for founder of Whitchurch family firm
IT was lovely to see some of the photos of Whitchurch taken in days gone by in your feature "Trip down Memory Lane" in the Herald.
Of particular interest to me and my family is the photograph entitled "Picture house".
It may be of interest to your readers with long memories that the gentleman striding down Mill Street in the photograph is my late grandfather Fred Denman, founder of Denman's of Whitchurch Ltd.
Also, and as far as we know purely by coincidence, the lorry navigating the Highgate corner behind him in the photograph is a Denman's lorry - a white "two-stroke Commer", quite a revolutionary truck in its day.
It was purchased mainly to carry animal feeds but also carried steel for W H Smiths, The Foundry, Talbot Street.
The signpost of the old Highgate Inn can also just be seen behind him, it is now used as storage and office space.
