Tarvin Memories: John Thomasen
John Thomasen was the schoolmaster at Tarvin School for 36 years (until his death in 1740) and gained national recognition for his penmanship during this time.

His particular speciality was the Greek language and Queen Anne was said to have been so impressed by his skill that she asked him to copy the work of the old Greek poets for her collection. Many of his documents also found their way into museums and libraries throughout the country.
John Thomasen is buried at St Andrew's Church in Tarvin, close to the school where he spent most of his working life. His gravestone in the porch features a quill and book commemorating his dual achievements in the fields of education and calligraphy.

Thank you for this "memory." I live in the USA and visit Tarvin from time to time. I will be sure to check out this gravestone the next time I visit. I also look forward to hearing the change ringing practice at the church on Thursday evenings and if there happen to be weddings.
