Chester Memories: Kop 58 Football Club reunion
SUNDAY League footballers who have kicked a ball around Vernon Road off Sealand Road, are invited to a reunion.
Ex-players, officials and supporters of the Kop 58 Football Club, founded in 1958, are invited to the Shropshire Arms pub in Chester's Town Hall square on Friday, May 29, from 7pm onwards.
Former member Tommy Hughes said: "The event is going to be held in memory of one of the club's real characters, Ted Wolfe, one of the founder members of the club and a manager of the league."
Ted's son Colin and former players Ray Symmonds and Phil (Clema) Shore are hoping for a big turn out on what promises to be a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane.
All proceeds will go towards the Chronicle-backed charity Miles of Smiles.
Kop 58 started life as a bunch of lads kicking a ball around opposite The Kop in Sealand Road in 1958 every Saturday. They became Kingston Rovers before being renamed Kop 58.
In the 1964-5 season The Chester and District Sunday League was founded and many more teams sprung up around Chester. By 1967 the league was in full swing, boasting a section A, B and C. Kop 58 won the Chronicle Shield as section B winners in 1969-70.
Other top teams of the time were Christleton, Hoole Albion and the Civil Service. Later additions included Barlows, Satinex (Modo), Bear & Billet, Mainland and the Liver which became major forces in the league and the Cheshire Amateur Sunday Cup.
If you were connected with Kop 58 and would like to attend the reunion, book in at the Shropshire Arms or ring Tommy Hughes on 01244 372161.
