Crewe Memories: Great Scot! It's the steam team

By Crewe Chronicle on Apr 1, 09 10:40 AM in 1900-1999

THE steam locomotive repair and rebuild team at Pete Waterman's London & North Western Railway Heritage Co Ltd works in Crewe has completed a major rebuild of the iconic ex-LMS steam locomotive 6100 Royal Scot.

The steam legend was first rescued from a date with the cutting torch by Sir Billy Butlin who put the engine on display at his Skegness holiday camp.

Royal Scot then moved to a transport museum at Bressingham in Norfolk and steamed there for a short while in the 1970s. 6100 was then placed on static display for more than 20 years until a restoration team at Southall started on the latest restoration project.

The Southall team worked for fours years on the rebuild but eventually ran out of time as, under Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) rules, the loco had to be completed by the end of March and they were unable to guarantee meeting that target.

At that point in stepped Mr Waterman and his steam engineers. The partly-restored loco was moved to Crewe by low loader on February 2 and then began the race against time as the engine was booked to steam at a special gala event in Somerset on Saturday.

Steam shop manager Steve Latham and boiler specialist Richard Watkins put a plan into action which saw the Crewe loco specialists work around the clock to complete the restoration in time. Their efforts were rewarded when 6100 steamed again two weeks ago for the first time in more than 30 years.

Royal Scot was delivered to the West Somerset Railway in time to meet the HLF deadline. The loco will remain there for two weeks' running in with LNWR engineers in attendance. It may also pay a steaming visit to the Llangollen Railway on its way back north before entering the works again in order to be prepared to the standard required for mainline running.
