Crewe Memories: Steam loco goes on tour

By Crewe Chronicle on Apr 22, 09 12:15 PM in 2000 onwards

AN ICONIC steam locomotive which was damaged in a bizarre fire which broke out while it was being moved on a heavy road transporter from Crewe is being showcased at Llangollen Railway.

Last month, the 'Royal Scot' was damaged after it underwent a lavish £1m overhaul at Crewe Heritage Centre before it was about to haul its first trains for 31 years.

And now fully repaired and looking showroom-new once more in bright LMS red livery, the engine which wowed more than three million people in the USA and Canada during a famous tour there in 1933, is the star turn at a remarkable £100,000 nine-day steam locomotive event which started on Saturday at the Llangollen Railway.

Steam locomotives from the four corners of Britain are converging on this superbly-scenic steam heritage line, and will run more than 2,500 miles, and more than 250 express passenger and goods trains until Sunday.
