Mold Memories: The historic Gwysaney estate to be sold
ONE of Flintshire's most historic country estates is to be put on the market.
Gwysaney, near Mold, which includes the famous 16th Century hall and about 2,000 acres of land, tenanted farms, cottages and commercial premises, is being sold by owners Richard and Sarah Davies-Cooke.
The hall, which is about 1.5miles out of town on the Denbigh Road, was built in 1550 by Robert Davies and has seen many changes - including surviving a siege from Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces in 1645 and an 1850 partial rebuild.
A statement released by Strutt and Parker said: "Mr and Mrs Davies-Cooke have taken the decision to sell Gwysaney.
"They feel a huge responsibility to ensure the integrity of the estate remains intact long into the future.
"After careful consideration, they have decided to sell the whole estate. Strutt & Parker have been instructed to find a buyer to whom the legacy of Gwysaney can be passed on, and who will enjoy and cherish the estate."
In June, Mr and Mrs Davies-Cooke will be hosting the Festival of Hope at Gwysaney to raise funds for Hope House and Ty Gobaith children's hospices.
Festival organiser and leading Welsh tenor Rhys Meirion, said: "I promise visitors will experience a memorable festival. I know Richard and Sarah are delighted to have been asked to hold such a major funding raising event for this incredible charity."
Strutt & Parker have not yet released the price guide for the estate, but it is expected to run into millions of pounds.
Jonathan Major, a partner at the Chester office of Strutt and Parker, said it was the first time in years an estate like Gwysaney had been put up for sale in North Wales.

This is disgraceful, they have tried nothing to prevent this, and in 4 years have spent, spent and spent money as if it was going out of fashion.
This is my heritage as well!!
My Father Peter Davies-Cooke and all the ancestors would be turning in their graves.
He has not tried hard enough to save the Estate!
What a shame that this wonderful estate is going to be sold off. I have fond memories of my teenage years being spent two evening a week on the Estate with the Army Cadets. A wonderful area of tranquility.
I sympathise with Paul Davies-Cooke and can see why he is so angry at the loss of such a long line of heritage.
Surely more could be done to keep the Estate in the Davies-Cooke family line?
I have every sympathy with Mr Paul Davies- Cooke and although I have no connections at all with either Gwsanay or the Davies-Cooke family, even I feel a personal loss regarding the impending sale.
I have visited the gardens at times when Captain Davies-Cooke opened the gardens to the public, walked the public footpaths through the park and farmland, met Captain Davies-Cooke who I found to be very likeable and unassuming, and have a copy of the history of Gwysanay and Owston from ancient times.
Without the Davies-Cooke family connection to Gwysanay, the house, the land , everything, will lose its soul; is there still time to reverse the decision to sell ?, I hope so, the value of Gwysanay in monetary terms is just a figure on a balance sheet.
Out the the old in with the new what the place needs in a skate park with free bmx hire
I FIND THE COMMENTS ABOVE VERY OFFENSIVE (OUT WITH THE OLD) HOWEVER I DO FEEL THE OLD PLACE SHOULD BE BULLDOZED IN FAVOUR OF A SUPERMARKET OR PRISON A BIG PRISON TO HOLD MR
DAVIES-COOKE AND HIS OVERINFLATED EGO SO HE CAN SPEND SOMETIME THINKING ABOUT THE NEGATIVE AFFECT HE'S HAD ON THE REST OF THE WORLD I WOULD LOVE TO SIT ASTRIDE THE WRECKING BALL AS IT SMASHED IT'S WAY THROUGH WALLS.THIS PLACE USED TO BE SUCH GOOD FUN I REMEMBER GOING TO THE YEARLY FETE HERE WHEN I WAS A YOUNG WHIPPERSNAPPER NOW THE PLACE IS JUST FULL OF OLD STIFFS
Who cares? Times change people move on.
I agree with Pavan Nandra. This Roberts person is a fool. Who cares about your childhood. I can not take his opinion seriously, as it is the first time he has used a computer. Does he not know how to turn off caps lock?
We have a Welsh Dresser made of Gwysaney oak circa ?150 or so years old. Very proud of it. Also enjoyed garden fetes with helicopter rides and numerous walks around the place. Lovely to see spring lambs and pheasant wandering about. So sorry to hear the Davis-Cookes can't carry on. The summer festival in aid of Hope House looks to be a brilliant event. Is there no possibility of keeping it going as a Glyndbourne or something similar? Glastonbury!
With all good wishes to the family for the future
If the truth behind any such tale were known to all then R D-C would not be seen as a forlorn figure having to part with the family estate.
Some comments have been very flippant but part of the truth is the inconsiderate treatment of interested parties. If my family treated me in the way the two younger D-C sons have been treated I would be extremely vexed.
I too believe that Capt P.P.D-C would be rotating in his coffin.
