Crewe Memories: Crewe war veteran Bernard Morgan to share experiences with children at school in France to mark D-Day anniversary
A SOUTH Cheshire war veteran will present a special plate to a French high school to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
Bernard Morgan, of Manor Way, Crewe, will present a special plate, given to him by the Mayor of Crewe, Cllr Brian Silvester, to a school in Bayeux, Normandy, this Saturday, and will also give a speech in French.
The 85-year-old said: "The main reason I am going is to pay my respects to my fellow comrades, who tragically lost their lives during the battles in Normandy.
"I will talk to the schoolchildren about the invasion itself, my role as a sergeant in the RAF and the events that took place when I was part of the Cold and Cypher division, of the Second Tactical Airforce."
Mr Morgan's section controlled all aircraft movements for the invasion of Normandy until the end of the war in Europe in May 1945.
He added: "The efforts of our local MP, Edward Timpson, cannot be underestimated. He played a significant role in getting National Lottery funding to provide travel expenses for the veterans by speaking to the Secretary of State for Defence."
