ONE of the great engineering achievements of the Industrial Revolution, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, has featured on BBC4's Hidden Histories.

The aqueduct was included in a fascinating first episode which uses computer animation to explain how it was built.

BBC News anchorman Huw Edwards presents the five-part series.

He follows the Royal Commission's work on the ancient and historical monuments of Wales.

The aqueduct, built between 1795 and 1805, is expected to be announced as Britain's newest World Heritage Site in June.

With its 19 spans and 38.4m height the aqueduct was the tallest in the world for 200 years.

The terrain presented many obstacles to the engineers, William Jessop and Thomas Telford, especially the crossing of the Dee valley.

Series producer Richard Edwards said: "I thought I had a good idea of what Wales had to offer in terms of its history and buildings.

"How wrong I was! There's so much more depth and hidden histories in this small nation of ours and I think viewers will be fascinated by what was uncovered during the filming of the series."

Huw Edwards said: "The Royal Commission is emphatic about the future of Wales, as well as its past."

The picture shows the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal 126ft above the River Dee.
