Runcorn Memories: Mustard gas link to our mineshafts
THE Valley History Society at Rhydymwyn, Mold, is holding an Open Day this Sunday, June 21.
The area is now forever linked with the production, storage and post-war disposal of large quantities of mustard gas.
The substance was produced on the old Randle Works on Wigg Island.
The Rhydymwyn Valley was the site chosen for the disposal of Randle's mustard gas.
The operations were secret and complex in nature.
As a result personnel from the Runcorn district were deployed to the Valley Works during and after the war.
Jeff Storey, of Top Road, Frodsham, is a member of the Valley History Society as well as the Runcorn Historical Society.
He kindly dropped me a note about the open day.
He points out that the event will give people an opportunity to view the complex of storage tunnels which go deep into the hillside at Rhydymwyn.
The Valley History Society open day lasts from 10am to 6pm.
