Alsager Memories: Reunion at Alsager CE Controlled Primary School
A REUNION of pupils who left Alsager CE Controlled Primary School in 1959 has just taken place in the very building in which they were taught 50 years ago.
The building, which is now the annex of Alsager Highfields Community Primary School, proved the ideal venue to reminisce and share stories of happy times.
Old classmates travelled from various parts of the British Isles to enjoy the occasion on a summer afternoon.
With a display of old photographs and an assortment of memorabilia, including a second edition of the school magazine dated 1959, everyone was in good spirits.
Past teachers' names came flooding back, with Mrs Robinson, Mrs Creed, Mrs Sheppey, Mr Riley, Mr Taylor and headteacher Mr Molyneux all remembered with affection.
Conversations also revolved around sports days held in Fairview Gardens, now the Alsager car park, winning the District Sports in Milton Gardens, being moved out to be taught in the Primitive Methodist School Rooms and at Fields Road and school dinners eaten in the old Institute Building.
To supplement the talking, a buffet was available throughout the afternoon.
Organiser Philip Eardley told the Chronicle that out of 47 pupils who were in the class he had tracked down 30 of them for the reunion.
He said: "It was a truly worthwhile event, with many friendships renewed and promises of further meetings in the future."
A donation of £100 from the reunion was given to the present headteacher of Highfield School, John Girbow, along with the thanks from everyone for the use of the building to enable a step back in time.
It is hoped the donation will be spent on buying something special for the annex building.
