Crewe Memories: Ruskin School marks 100 years of education

A SOUTH Cheshire school is looking forward to its next 100 years after celebrating its centenary.

Hundreds of pupils past and present turned up at Ruskin Sports and Languages College in Crewe for a series of open days.

Bursar Jean Golding said the reunion was even better than they could have hoped for.
"It was very successful. We were absolutely delighted with the numbers of past pupils who came back, particularly those from when it was the old grammar school."

The oldest pupil to return was Sybil Mercer, maiden name Barnett, who was a pupil at the Ruskin Road school between 1931 and 1939.

"She came up for the day from her home in Stratford-upon-Avon," said Mrs Golding.

Other former pupils flew in from different parts of the world.

Mrs Golding added: "We had them coming from as far away as Canada, the USA, Germany, Dubai and Australia. One couple came from Hampshire. They had met at the school many years ago and got married. We had quite a few couples come back who had met at the school."

The event was attended by Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon and Crewe town mayor Dorothy Flude.

Mrs Golding said many past pupils were surprised at how little the original buildings had changed.

The celebrations rounded off a successful 15 years at the helm for headteacher Phil Mottershead, who will be retiring at the end of this term.

"We've not had many heads here and the centenary celebrations made the end of his time here at Ruskin a very happy one," said Mrs Golding.
