THE new-look Greenfield Docks was officially reopened this week, as part of the Big Dee Festival.

A substantial regeneration project has been taking place at the site and improvements include a new sculpture, information panels and a piece of artwork.

Views of the estuary are now accessible to everyone with the site's new tarmac surface, hand rail and walkway.

The mayor of Holywell, Cllr Rosetta Dolphin, said: "Twelve months ago you couldn't even drive a car over here because of all the potholes but now it looks great.

"It was brilliant to see so many people down here for the opening.

"We're now hoping to transform the other side of the dock and adopt the land."

Flintshire County Council leader Cllr Arnold Woolley was at the opening along with Cllr Dolphin and Kingspan's head of operations, Mark Harris.

Cllr Woolley said: "I am very pleased to be part of the event to mark the regeneration of this historic dock and would like to thank everyone involved.

"I hope visitors and residents of Flintshire will enjoy the spectacular scenery the Estuary has to offer from this point."

The two-year project has been co-ordinated by the coastal unit of Flintshire Countryside Services, with support from Friends of Greenfield Dock, the Dee Estuary Sea Fishermen, Ramblers, Sustrans, Dee Estuary Wildflowers, RSPB, Holywell Town Council and the North Wales Fishing Association.

Kingspan, ScottishPower and Tidy Towns were among the companies that provided funding for the transformation.

Mike Taylor, senior ranger for Flintshire Countryside Services, said: "We hope this project will prove an example of what can be achieved in improving derelict sites along the coastline."

As a member of The Friends of Greenfield Dock. If any body has any old photos, paintings or etchings pre, 1950s Please could you get in touch with me I have searched high a low but to no avail, for any early images of the dock. This information would be of great interest to our group, for information boards which are currently being erected around the docks.
