Nantwich Memories: Are you in the old school picture?

By Crewe Chronicle on Aug 13, 09 11:02 AM in 1500-1799

FORMER pupils of Acton and Nantwich Grammar School might recognise themselves.

schoolpic.jpg

Kindly supplied by Nantwich woman Joan Shenton, nee Cooke, it shows the form group of Mr Latus 55 years ago.

Joan says the school, now Malbank School and Sixth Form Centre, has changed somewhat over the years, but she still remembers how it used to be.

"There were more fields back when we were at school and there were even air-raid shelters in one of the fields, which I presume were for the school from the war," she said.

"I remember Mr Latus well, who was our form teacher. I think he did metal work so, of course, I never had him as a teacher other than in form.

"At the time we had our form room in the headmaster's house. We weren't in the actual school building itself which meant a bit of extra walking but that was OK.

"Some of my friends from the school included Kevin Hamsley, Gemma Beavons and Sonia Elliott. I still see Kevin and also Janet Evans and Helen Lindock sometimes.

"We enjoyed our time there. It was quite strict back in those days and the girls did get detentions sometimes. But the cane was only given to the boys."

Have you got an old photograph of Malbank School? Are you a former pupil or member of staff at Malbank or the old Nantwich and Acton Grammar School?

The school is celebrating its 450th anniversary in 2010.

An appeal is being made to Chronicle readers to come forward with any photographs, uniforms, memorabilia or memories that could be shared with others.

If you have any items that can be used by the school or would like to be kept informed of the forthcoming anniversary celebrations, visit www.malbank.cheshire.sch.uk.

The picture shows classmates from 55 years ago having their photo taken at the former Acton and Nantwich Grammar School.

I ATTENDED THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1949 - 1952. I THINK I RECOGNIZE SEVERAL PUPILS IN THE PHOTO, BUT IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE MY CLASS.
MY MEMORIES INCLUDE BUYING NOT-SO-RIPE APPLES AND PEARS GROWN AT THE SCHOOL AND WHENEVER I SMELL FOOD BEING COOKED IN HOSPITAL KITCHENS, I AM REMINDED OF THE SCHOOL DINING ROOM AND THE BATTLE TO GET ENOUGH TO EAT. I REMEMBER TOO, THE CROSS-COUNTRY RACES ALONG THE CANAL.
'JOHNNY' LODGE WAS THE HEAD MASTER AND HE HAD A FEARSOME REPUTATION WITH A CANE.
I MOVED TO AUSTRALIA IN 1953 AND HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF THE SCHOOL.
I WOULD WELCOME ANY RESPONSES.
