Gresford Memories: Wrexham AM Lesley Griffiths pays visit to All Saints' Church, Gresford, which is undergoing restoration
WREXHAM'S AM has paid a visit to one of the oldest and historically most significant buildings in her constituency, to see how important restoration work is progressing.
Lesley Griffiths AM, made her visit to All Saints' Church, Gresford, where the 14th century tower is undergoing major £130,000 restoration thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (approximately £80,000), CADW (£30,000) and WREN (£20,000).
The visit was at the invitation of Sue Kelly, a member of the parochial church council and project administrator on behalf of the church.
The work to the tower is being carried out by the Manchester-based company Mather and Ellis Stonemasons, which specialises in historic building restoration.
The earliest mention of a church at Gresford is in the Domesday Book AD1086 and the origins of the current tower date from the 14th century. The current All Saints' Church is one of the finest perpendicular churches in Wales.
The bells housed within the tower at All Saints are one of the Seven Wonders of Wales.
Ms Griffiths AM said: "All Saints' Church is a hugely important and historically significant building - not just to Gresford and Wrexham but on a national level too.
"It is essential this restoration work takes place to ensure the tower is protected for future generations."
