Wrexham Memories: MP Ian Lucas helps law firm celebrate its 90th birthday

AN MP has paid tribute to one of Wales's eminent law firms after reaching a historic milestone.

Wrexham Labour MP Ian Lucas, who was a solicitor before entering Parliament, was speaking during a visit to Cyril Jones and Co who are celebrating their 90th birthday.

According to Mr Lucas, the firm is an important part of the fabric of community and commercial life in the town.

The company was founded in Wrexham by Cyril Jones, who had a passion for representing the poor.

He was a Welsh speaker who supported the idea of a Welsh Parliament and a local politician who led the clearance of Wrexham's slums and uniquely stood against his brother for Parliament.

Most famously of all Cyril Jones represented the families of the miners who died in the Gresford Disaster of 1934, when 267 men died.

He briefed the famous barrister and Labour MP Sir Stafford Cripps for the public enquiry which led directly to the nationalisation of the mines by Clement Atlee's post-war Labour Government.

The company has offices in Wrexham's Grosvenor Road and Egerton Street and in Shotton, Deeside.

Mr Lucas said: "I was pleased be able to join the 90th birthday celebrations at Cyril Jones and Co.

"I used to be a solicitor in Wrexham and I know many of the partners and the staff so it was great to have the opportunity to catch up with them.

"I am delighted they are still doing a good job after 90 years in business and long may that continue."

Gareth Jones, a senior partner at the firm, was pleased Mr Lucas had taken time out to help them mark the milestone.

He said: "From our point of view, it is particularly appropriate Ian Lucas is the local MP because he started out as a solicitor and he has an in-depth understanding of the issues that we face."
