Crewe Memories: Were The Krinks the original tribute act?

By Crewe Chronicle on Oct 12, 09 12:04 PM in 1900-1999

COULD these four strapping lads have been the first ever tribute band around? Band member Dave Nixon thinks they might have been.

The foursome, known as Count Grenville and The Krinks, are shown here posing with their instruments by the picturesque Queen's Park lake in Crewe.

The band, which formed almost immediately after leaving school, played all the hits of The Kinks, who were at the height of their popularity at the time the picture was taken in 1964.

Dave, Chris Dunn and Keith Barber were classmates at Ludford Street Boys School, before they met Grenville Lyons, who later went on to manage the Civic Hall in Nantwich.

Dave, who lives at Oakley Street, Crewe said: "We were in the final at the Majestic Ballroom in High Street, which is now The M Club, in a Battle of the Bands competition, where we lost to a band called The Scorpions.

"In 1962 we offered to play at a wedding reception for free, but we were that bad that the guests had a collection and gave us the money on the condition that we stopped playing."

"We packed up a couple of years after that photo was taken. I think we were about 40 years ahead of our time!"

The above picture shows quartet Dave Nixon, Chris Dunn, Grenville Lyons and Keith Barber as Count Grenville and The Krinks.

I can recall them used to go to the same school at around the same time as Keith Barber also remember Gary B Goode and the Hotrods playing at the Majestic, great floor it was a suspended floor one of the first around at the time, you could stand on the floor and feel it bouncing up and down as everyone was dancing. Also remember a group called Dene Wynne and the Exiles I think that Ken Lockwood played for them, tell me if I am wrong! Also remember when The Comedians were doing the rounds around the country and them featuring at Up The Junction South Street Crewe, Ken Smith was the owner of the "Junction" then. Had some great times in and around good old Crewe. Used to live in Coppenhall in those days born and bred there.
