Runcorn Memories: Upcoming dates for history buffs
THE Runcorn Group of the Family History Society is hosting a Members' Day at Churchill Hall, Cooper Street, Runcorn, on Saturday, October 17.
Doors open at 10am and highlights include an illustrated talk half an hour later by retired Runcorn diver Les Brown whose knowledge of the Ship Canal means he is constantly in demand for his enjoyable, entertaining and beautifully illustrated shows.
Another attraction is a display of local photographs by outstanding amateur cameraman Roy Gough and there is also a collection of pictures being shown by Diana Leitch. Her photos span more than three decades from the town's work places, including ICI Castner Kellner Works, Wigg and Rocksavage.
The society holds its annual general meeting at 2.30pm, followed by refreshments with tea and coffee and biscuits and cakes all 'on tap.'
Next Friday, October 16, Runcorn gets another chance to see Runcorn band singer Alan Watson and the Merseyside Big Band at the Runcorn War Memorial Club (8pm start). Tickets, priced £3, are available from the club or you can pay at the door.
The following Tuesday, October 20, the Catalyst Museum at West Bank is staging a 'mini' Thomas Boltons day at the museum. With the help of museum curator Paul Meara, the stories featured on this page have helped create renewed interest in the history of the old Widnes copper works.
"We would like to encourage people to bring in anything of interest so we can see what else is out there," says Paul.
"For example, one of the company's other Lister tractor drivers, Phyllis Dennett, is bringing in photos of her and Dot Bentley in the yard at Boltons."
