Flintshire Memories: Mostyn Clocktower building to be sold

By Flintshire Chronicle on Dec 21, 09 11:31 AM in 1900-1945

A LANDMARK building in Mostyn is to be put up for sale in the new year.

The Clocktower, formally known as the Robert Davies Memorial Hall, is expected to be put on the market early next year.

Since 1997 it had been owned by performing arts charity the Broli Cymraeg Trust, which went into compulsory liquidation in June this year, and will now be sold off as part of the charity's assets.

Judith Pryer, manager of the Chester branch of insolvency practitioner Parkin S Booth and Co, said: "We are working with agents on the sale of the building and will be getting valuations for the building in the new year.

"We are as keen to get it on the market as I'm sure local people are.

"It is a beautiful building and could be used for a lot of things."

The Clocktower building was donated to the people of Mostyn in the 1920s.

When the building was taken over by the charity 12 years ago a residential block was built behind it.

Ms Pryer could not comment on whether the two properties would be sold together.

Delyn AM Sandy Mewies said: "I have been in close contact with the liquidators and also with those individuals and organisations hoping to be involved in the future of the Clocktower.

"I share their hopes that the facilities will be preserved for the community."

When the Broli Cymraeg Trust was set up, in 1996, it received a £750,000 grant from the National Lottery.

The Arts Council of Wales, which distributes lottery money, has been in discussions with liquidators since the summer to see how much of the grant money can be recovered.

Ms Pryer said: "We are looking at how much of the grant money will be repaid, but it's an issue that's ongoing at the moment."

I would like to say how sad I would be if the memorial hall was not preserved as intended for the community of Mostyn and worse still ended up being demolished.

Robert Davies was my great uncle of whom I know very little other than he involved in steam ship building and was born in Mostyn the son of a sea captain from Amlwch.

If anyone knows when he died or when the money was donated for the building of the hall I would be so grateful if they could find time to email me.

Linda Howarth (Davies) said:

As a young girl, I was always told that this hall was in my families history.
Captain Robert Davies was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather and it was his son Robert Davies's money that was used to build the hall.
I too would like to see the hall preserved and used by the community.
I would also like to contact any other relative of Captain Robert Davies.

The Community Hall and Clock Tower where built with funds provided by Robert Davies in his will.

Robert was an owner of ships which plied between Liverpool and the West Indies importing exotic fruit which sold through his wholesale business.

He was the son of Captain Robert Davies who built and operated the Prince of Wales paddle steamer which ran a daily service to Liverpool and back

carrying many of the wealthy business men who had built houses in North Wales. The Captain lived in Mostyn House which overlooked Mostyn
harbour which was a busy port in those days.Young Robert was no doubt brought
up in Mostyn so when he died a very wealthy man circa in 1924 ,a bachelor he did make a number of donations in his will which included a wing for a hospital,a wing for a library the hall and apparently a cats home.

His nieces inherited the remainder of the estate a part of which was Mostyn House which was bequeathed to my Great Aunt Francis Richards.
