Sandbach Memories: Truck firm history told from inside
A FORMER director at Sandbach's historic ERF truck company has written a book on the world-famous firm.
Dai Davies, 71, is launching his book, ERF - The Inside Story, at Crewe Library from 3-7pm on Monday, December 21.
Dai, who now lives near Johannesburg, joined the now defunct company as an apprentice in 1954 and went on to become managing director of its South African, Australian and New Zealand operations before retiring after 43 years' service.
He last visited Sandbach last year and was overwhelmed by the level of interest in the book.
He said: "I'd be thrilled to meet anyone at the Crewe event who used to work for the company or anyone who is just interested in learning more about the company's rich heritage."
ERF was founded in 1933. The final trucks rolled off the line in 2007.
Dai witnessed the firm's highs and lows. In the 60s he travelled far and wide on the company's behalf.
He then returned as general service manager at the firm's Middlewich factory before being moved to head up the company's affairs overseas in 1975. In 1993 he was awarded the OBE.
ERF - The Inside Story is ã25 and can be ordered on 01270 611665.
