The Exiles had better make the most of a long, hard season

By Chester City Exiles on Aug 20, 09 11:19 AM in

It's going to be a long, hard season and the southern-based Exiles had better make the most of it, as it's already looking like we face a season of northern-based matches in 2010-2011.

Still, after this summer's off-the-field activities, I suppose we should be grateful that we still have a team to cheer - even if they look unlikely to move off the foot of the table.

It was hard to blame the eleven players on the Oxford pitch last night for their inglorious 4-0 defeat. By the second half, you could clearly tell they were lacking match fitness and there was no answer to each of Oxford's four goals.

The Blues supporters were in fine form, however. The gang around the drummer kept up a chant that had most of the 131 travelling fans clapping along in support. But that was before goal number two, when suddenly 25 points started looking like an impossible mountain to climb.

Still, it was good to catch up with some fellow Exiles and hear their recent experiences in the name of CCFC. One of our number had booked her family into a hotel in Chester in advance of the Gateshead game that never was. Someone else told how they set off for Grays before a last-minute text told them to turn for home. There's always a tale to tell, and it's often the banter around the football that keeps us going to matches, as much as the performance on the field.

Oh yes, there was one fan was one who went to the Cambridge match at home and thought we deserved a win. I'm afraid I can't look ahead to Luton with such optimism. But it will be good to catch-up with some old friends again - it's looking like it's the most I'm going to get out of this season, although I'm more than willing to be proved wrong.
