When Saturday comes...

By Chester City Exiles on Sep 11, 09 10:38 AM in

Saturday will always feel like a football day to me and on those occasions when I'm not at a match, I'll generally be refreshing my laptop screen looking for a goal update.

But last Saturday, circumstances meant I was in a shopping centre from 3-5pm. It was a strange experience to see people who don't follow the God of Football going about their usual Saturday afternoon business - and this time I was one of them! I wasn't even wearing my Chester polo shirt to mark me out from the crowd.

Under those conditions, I was fully prepared for City to lose heavily. How could they win without me having some sort of participation - even at the end of the world wide web?

Obviously I had my mobile phone on hand to keep me updated as I mingled with the throng of non-football lovers. The first Chester goal actually came when I was on an escalator - possibly the first time someone has celebrated a Blues goal on that spot.

Soon it was time for a coffee break. This non-football Saturday afternoon lark sure is hard work! But as I sipped my expensive cappuccino, there was more phone news from Deva Stadium. City were 2-0 up and suddenly Saturday shopping wasn't so tiring. Before long the 2-0 result was confirmed. YES - a victory at last!

Now, where was I on Tuesday evening as City ran out against Tamworth? I'm afraid it wasn't the shopping centre, but the final hole of a round of post-work golf. I was just packing away my clubs in the gloom when City went 1-0 down. I kind of knew that would be it and a trip to the pub couldn't deaden my depression at being behind to the mighty Tamworth. So the 1-2 scoreline was not unexpected and I felt glad I had beer in front of me and not cappuccino when the final whistle blew.

This Saturday will also see me give the game a miss (regular readers will know by now that I'm not a part-time supporter). But Chester had better beware, as I'm going to be on the golf course again. This time I promise I'll have a post-golf coffee and give the 19th hole beer a miss - then it won't be my fault again.
