Low Carbon: Chester schoolchildren plant trees in Westminster Park.
SCHOOLCHILDREN have been digging the dirt to improve a Chester park.
Youngsters from Belgrave, Lache, Overleigh St Mary's and St Clare's primary schools, Queen's Park High School and Chester Catholic High School planted trees in Westminster Park.
With the help of Friends of Westminster Park and local councillors, 35 children from the six schools planted saplings in an area dedicated to encourage wildlife.
The works are part of Westminster Park Phase 2 and should be completed by spring 2009. Improvements include a new BMX track, play facilities for juniors and teenagers, a new Multi Use Games Area, footpaths, seats and bins, sculptural earth mounding and associated planting works.
The £170k project was made possible with funding from The Big Lottery Fund and WREN Waste Recycling Environmental, which administers and distributes landfill credits on behalf of Waste Recycling Group Ltd.
Local councillor Richard Short said: "It was wonderful to see young children working with spades to plant the trees that will form a natural backdrop to the splendid facilities in the park.
"I am sure they will have ownership of those trees and care for them over many years."
