Low Carbon: Launch of Ellesmere Goes Green environmental scheme for Easter
A SMALL group in Ellesmere has formed to encourage and support fellow residents who want to make positive changes to the local environment.
Ellesmere Goes Green (EGG) will particularly focus on the need to reduce the community's contribution to global warming.
The group aims to continue the groundwork done by the Marches Energy Agency of Shrewsbury which chose Ellesmere as one of three communities in Shropshire for a project aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Over the last year MEA undertook energy surveys in 48 homes and more than 40 businesses in Ellesmere, resulting in more than 700 energy efficiency measures installed. These included a £42,000 grant towards the primary school pool's solar heating.
Together these measures will reduce the carbon dioxide locally produced each year by 560 tonnes and save businesses and residents more than £100,000 in reduced fuel bills.
EGG is now concentrating on letting everyone know what Ellesmere people and businesses are doing, however small.
It will be awarding Green Egg Awards to those in the community who demonstrate some outstanding contribution to the green cause. So look out for the green egg in shop and home windows - it's a good sign.
Useful 'green' information will be available at displays around the town in places like InfoLink.
Articles will appear in the Mere News and events will take place throughout the year to support the community in its' efforts.
EGG will also hold a 'Spring bulb' bonanza where nearly 1,000 low energy light bulbs will be given away free to residents over Easter week, while children will get to enjoy a related Easter egg hunt around the town. Posters will give more details nearer the time.
