Low Carbon: Protection for Fenns, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses

PUMPS made in Whitchurch are helping protect farmland in a nature reserve during excessive downpours.

The technology is ensuring farmers in Fenns, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses can handle huge volumes of excess rainwater on their fields.

To protect the Site of Special Scientific Interest, water has to be kept at a specific level. Any excess flows are released on to surrounding land, including a major egg producer, for whom Landia of Whitchurch has installed two 5.5kW pumps to deal with the problem.

A three-phase power supply would normally be needed but, by working in close conjunction with the firm Crawford Controls, Invertek Optidrive VTC inverters placed in the control panel mean that just a single-phase supply is required, providing a highly energy-efficient pumping solution.

Paul Davies, Landia's UK and Eire agricultural manager, said: "The pump and inverter combination has given the egg producer great peace of mind and no interruption to their business.

"It is also keeping energy costs under control."

The Mosses are home to a significant number of rare species, including damselfly, beetles, butterflies, moths and caddisfly.
