Low Carbon: Grants available for projects encouraging recycling or waste reduction in Shropshire

By Sarah Griffiths on Jun 25, 09 11:01 AM in News

PROJECTS encouraging waste reduction, re-use or recycling are available for community groups in Shropshire.

Grants of up to £3000 are now available via Shropshire Community Recycling Ltd (SCRL) - the body funded by Shropshire Council to help encourage recycling. The deadline for applications is June 26.

Preference will be given to projects which fulfil some or all of the following criteria:

Involve tangible practical activity i.e. implementation not research.

Reflect the waste hierarchy.

Target priority waste streams (e.g. biodegradable or hazardous
materials).

Can be readily replicated.

Are innovative or even risky.

Raise awareness or have an educational element.

Build capacity in the waste sector.

Create employment, volunteering or training opportunities.

Organisations which may apply include charitable organisations, unincorporated organisations, social and community enterprises and co-operatives and organisations benefiting a community.

Match funding is encouraged but not required.

James Thompson, waste prevention officer with Shropshire Council, said: "The voluntary sector plays a pivotal role in complementing the council's waste collection services and is helping us to keep useful items out of landfill.

"Through this grants programme we hope to stimulate more community-led waste reduction and recycling projects across the county."

Rosemary Collie, SCRL co-ordinator, said: "We are keen for more groups and organisations to get involved with our network. Membership of the network is free and as a member you can apply for grants from SCRL.

"For more information visit our website www.scrl.org. uk."
