Low Carbon: Moore Primary pupils given award for recycling Yellow Pages in conjunction with Woodland Trust
EFFORTS to save the environment have received a major boost thanks to Runcorn school children.
Pupils from Moore Primary received an award at the Stobart Stadium, Widnes, for helping to recycle the most Yellow Pages phone books.
The effort was part of the Yellow Woods Challenge, run in conjunction with The Woodland Trust, and aims to reduce the number of books going to landfill.
Yellow Pages offered a total of £600 in cash prizes to the schools which recycled the most directories per pupil, plus a £100 bonus prize for the best newcomer.
For every pound donated to schools the firm matched it with a £1 donation to the Woodland Trust.
To encourage more schools to participate this year, Halton Council topped up the prize fund by adding £100 to each category.
Cllr Phil Harris (environment), said: "The number of Yellow Pages they have collected has saved the equivalent of three cars going to landfill."
Moore Primary collected 652 copies, second was Pewithall Primary (552), and third was The Park (230).
Castle View Primary won a special award for best newcomers.
