Low Carbon: Waste transfer stations to be built

By James Shepherd on Jun 24, 09 10:03 AM in News

THREE new waste transfer stations constructed at Ellesmere Port, Macclesfield and Crewe have been annnced as part of a new strategy to treat residual household waste.

Two major companies bidding to manage the treatment of Cheshire's household waste for the next quarter of a century announced their proposed locations.

Viridor and Resource Recovery Solutions (Cheshire Ltd) (a partnership between United Utilities and Interserve) have been short listed by Cheshire's Councils to compete for the £850m Private Finance Initiative contract.

A final decision on the preferred option is expected to be made by late autumn.
The county already recycles around 47% of household waste, just 3% short of its 2020 target.

But acute shortage and rising costs of landfill; the effect of greenhouse gas on global warming and the need to gain further value from waste, requires sustainable treatment of around 200,000 tonnes of household waste annually.

Resource Recovery Solutions (RRS) has announced plans to develop a Waste Treatment Plant at New Cheshire Business Park on Wincham Lane, Wincham, which would create up to 70 new jobs.

The facility will utilise proven gasification technology to generate renewable energy from leftover, non-recycled waste - enough to power 22,500 Cheshire homes.

RRS's solution sits alongside the council's continued efforts to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. RRS plans to develop a Visitor and Education Centre to work with the community so it can learn more about sustainable waste management and do its bit for the environment.

At the heart of Viridor's plan is the development of a new Mechanical & Biological Treatment (MBT) waste treatment facility at the former INEOS chemical works at the Lostock Site, Griffiths Road, Northwich. Maximising alternative transport options including rail, this fuel will be transported by rail from the MBT facility to a purpose built power station to be constructed at Runcorn.

The transfer stations will provide local based reception of residual
