Low Carbon: Chester university students rewarded for recycling

By James Shepherd on Oct 8, 09 10:43 AM in Campaigns

CHESHIRE West and Chester Council is encouraging Chester's new students to recycle more by giving out special tins of baked beans.

Those students who recycle their empty cans could win a prize if their tin is randomly selected at the city's recycling recovery plant.

"We wanted to find a way to encourage students to learn how to make the most of the city's new waste collection service," said Cllr Neil Ritchie, lead councillor for environment.

He added: "Students returning after the summer break have not used the service, which was introduced in June.

"By offering an incentive we hope to get information across and avoid the difficulties associated with missed collection days.

"So far, we've had a great response. Students are very environmentally aware and, armed with the necessary knowledge, I am sure they will make the most of the fantastic recycling facilities available to them."

More than 3,000 tins of re-branded baked beans will be given out to students at locations across the city. The winners, chosen at the Bumpers Lane recycling facility, will receive vouchers for Sainsbury, Vue cinemas or iTunes.

The Council is working in partnership with Envirocomms and Chester Student Union on the awareness-raising campaign, which takes place in two stages.

Recycling teams will be on the streets handing out the bean tins, magnets showing recycling information and appropriate calendars to students until 1 October. Starting from 12 October, areas with a high density of students will receive house calls. Students will also be offered the chance to receive text messages reminding them when to put their waste out.
