Low Carbon: Flintshire County Council has pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 60% in 12 years
FLINTSHIRE County Council has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 60% by 2021.
As part of its Carbon Reduction Strategy, the council has promised to reduce emissions from its buildings by 20% in 2012, 40% in 2017, rising to 60% in 12 years time.
Part of the scheme will include a Carbon Trading Scheme beginning next April, which will see the council buying a carbon allowance every year, the size of which will reduce over time to encourage the council to use less energy and invest in energy efficient projects.
Councillor Tony Sharps, said: "The council is expected to lead by example. No-one should be frightened of these measures.
"We have saved three and a half tonnes of carbon just by renovating a small chapel, which was done with very little effort.
"Goodness knows what we can save if we pull together."
In a report given to the Executive, energy manager, Will Pierce, wrote: "There is worldwide acceptance that we must limit the rise in global temperature to no more than two degrees Celsius if potentially catastrophic climate change is to be avoided."
