Low Carbon: East Cheshire master composters to spread the word

A GROUP of 20 volunteers have got their hands dirty to become 'master composters'.

In October, Cheshire East Council asked for volunteers for a free two-day training course. Hundreds applied, meaning the course was oversubscribed by scores.

The course itself was held at Crewe Hall Hotel over a weekend, with detailed instructions on how to promote home composting to householders.

The trained composters now play a vital role in promoting composting and encouraging families to grow their own fruit and vegetables, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Cllr David Brickhill said: "I'd like to thank the volunteers and everyone who applied. The fact that it was over-subscribed is proof of the determination many people in Cheshire East have to improve their local environment.

"Research has shown that almost half of a household's food waste each year could have been composted.

"We're seeing an increase in the number of households beginning to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Not only does growing your own fruit and vegetables provide financial benefits for families but it's a great way to get the family active and spend time together."
