Low Carbon: Eco plea to put clocks 1hr ahead

By James Shepherd on Jun 21, 10 10:06 AM in News

Climate campaigners yesterday called for the clocks to be put forward one hour to save 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Their study showed being an extra 60 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time would cut electricity significantly as evenings would be lighter.

Pushing the clocks forward by two hours in summer would also reduce CO2.

The policy was adopted during the Second World War to conserve energy.

Dr Elizabeth Garnsey, who led the Cambridge University study, said: "The carbon savings are equivalent to taking around 200,000 cars off the road."

And Eugenie Harvey, of the 10:10 climate campaign, said: "Lighter evenings make us happier, healthier and safe."
