Low Carbon: Help local authorities to help themselves says fuel management expert

By James Shepherd on Jul 5, 10 01:41 PM in News

A leading fuel management expert is calling for incentives to help local authorities improve their vehicle fleets' efficiency.

James Cowham, Managing Director of Economy Tuning, says that council spending on vehicle fuel can be optimised without compromising service provision.

Mr Cowham believes that it's vital to give local authorities a helping hand to manage their budgets as they are already under severe pressure.

"Local authorities across the country are feeling the effects of swingeing cuts, and one area where they can genuinely make savings is in the amount of fuel they use," he said.

"Introducing a programme of upgrading the efficiency of fleet vehicles so that they use less fuel should be incentivised as there are so many benefits.

"As well as the monetary savings from consuming less fuel there is also the additional bonus of a reduction in emissions which is a priority for all local authorities under their NI 185 obligations.

"The only impact introducing such measures would have on front line services would be to make them greener and more efficient."

The aim of NI 185 is to measure the progress of local authorities, annually in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from providing council services.
